The very small scale reads almost like a solid, giving the eye a resting place next to the more complex focus fabric. Pink 2 could work—the colors and scale work well with the focus fabric. Pink 3 is a smaller scale floral than the focus fabric. The dark pink and the similar-looking print look good with the focus fabric. POTENTIAL COMBINATIONS FOCUS FABRIC + BLUE 4 + YELLOW 1 I like the scale and the colors, but the two prints are so similar that they become redundant. FOCUS FABRIC + BLUE 4 + PINK 1 This is the best so far; colors work well, as do the scale.
The more white you add, the lighter the color. This is called a tint. Now, let’s look at how colors play together. COMPLEMENTARY COLORS Complementary (or opposite) colors will seem to visually vibrate when put together. Understanding color complements allows you to bring excitement and energy to your quilts. Placement of a complementary color can draw attention to a certain area of a quilt, or create a secondary design. You probably already know the basic complementary colors, but if you understand why they are complements, you will be able to establish what the complements are for more complex colors, without the need of the confusing color wheel.
ROTARY CUTTING RULERS There are so many sizes and types of rotary cutting rulers that I can’t even begin to discuss them all, but they fall into three categories: 1. Rectangle: The rectangular ruler is the basic rotary ruler that you will need for the projects in this book and for any quilt project you may undertake. These rulers come in many sizes, but I recommend buying one that is 6½” (17cm) wide and at least 12” (30cm) long. I prefer rulers that are marked with a grid of 1” (25mm) squares and with lines every ¼” (6mm).
