These strategies can be exploited for the purposes of understanding and developing literacy acquisition to the benefit of African Americans and by extension, the entire human family. I believe that exploiting and exploring the intellectual depth of African American Vernacular practices and their interaction with literacy acquisition is key in accelerating the literacy achievement of many African American students. As argued by DuBois, African Americans need “work,” “culture,” and “liberty” together.

Many 34 AFRICAN AMERICAN LITERACIES speakers command a wide range of forms on the continuum from basiclectal to acrolectal. In this sense, “an educated, middle-class [B]lack person may express his or her identification with African American culture, free of the stigma attached to nonstandard speech [/grammar]” (Debose, 1992: 159; see also Rickford, 1980). AAVE discourse is often just under the surface of the rhetoric of African American standard English rhetors. 2 To put it another way, African American standard English discourses are in dialectical relation to Black Vernaculars and other non-standard American discourses as well as mainstream American discourses.

Historically speaking, Black folks didn’t get their rhetorical training through the basic writing classroom. Since Blacks have encountered Whites one of the main principles that governed Black/White discourse was power. Signifying and a host of literacy strategies were created in order to protect and advance the self and by extension African American culture. Investigation of Black folklore and African American ways of knowing is one way to get at the principles underlying successful Black communication strategies.
